The Millennium Declaration in 2000 was a milestone in international cooperation, inspiring development efforts that have improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world. Ten years later, world leaders will gather again at the United Nations in New York to review progress, assess obstacles and gaps, and agree on concrete strategies and actions to meet the eight Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The last two decades have shown that it is possible to defeat the scourge of poverty. Progress has not been uniform across countries, and there have been setbacks and disappointments. But overall, the rate of progress in reducing poverty and in increasing access to basic health, education, water, and other essential services is unparalleled in many countries’ histories.
New Analysis Reveals African Countries Top List of 20 Countries Making Most Overall Progress on MDGs
As G-8 and G-20 leaders prepare to gather in Canada, new analysis issued by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the United Nations Millennium Campaign finds that, in absolute terms, many of the world’s poorest countries are making the most overall progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – the set of promises world leaders made to significantly reduce extreme poverty, illiteracy and disease by 2015.
African heads of state rededicated themselves to the 1997 Harare declaration and pledged to halve malaria deaths by 2010. Yet with just one year left to the deadline, malaria remains one of the leading health hazards in Africa. The 2008 World Malaria Report indicates that malaria claimed 881,000 lives in 2006, of which 91% (801,000) were in Africa, while 85% were children under 5 years of age. In addition, half a billion African people became ill and unable to work.

NEW YORK – Ministers from over 100 countries, heads of bilateral and multilateral development agencies, donor organizations, and civil society organizations from around the world gathered from September 2-4 2008 in Accra for the Third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness.
Their common objective is to help developing countries and marginalized people in their fight against poverty by making aid more transparent, accountable and results-oriented.
United Nations Millennium Campaign - Goal 6 - Combat HIV AIDS
According to the draft Health Service Development Plan (HSDP) joint UNDP and Ministry of Heath report of 2005, the per capita health service expenditure of Ethiopia is rated at 5.9 US dollars, the least among a list of other developing countries such as Kenya (31 USD), Uganda(18 USD), and Tanzania(8 USD). The report also indicated that in order to meet MDGs Ethiopia needs to increase the health service expenditure to 34 USD.
AIDS and uneducated girls
AIDS spreads twice as quickly among uneducated girls than among girls that have even some schooling.
MDG and Muslims
Tehreek–e-Pasmanda Muslims Samaj in collaboration with Social Development Foundation and National Conference of Dalit Organizations with the support of United Nations Millennium Campaign considered it necessary to bring out a report on the status of Muslims for addressing the critical information gaps and an assessment of the progress of Muslims with reference to the Millennium Development Goals.
