Nigeria Confident About Millennium Development Goals

February 7, 2012 – Nigeria is “very optimistic” it will be able to meet the United Nations Millennium development goals before the self-imposed 2015 deadline, despite serious challenges on issues like environmental sustainability, Dr. Precious Gbeneol, the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) told a press conference at the United Nations Tuesday.

Thursday - 09 Feb, 2012 - Nigeria has called on countries across the globe to redouble their efforts to make the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) a reality.

Dr Precious Gbeneol, Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs made the call at a news conference on the UN Millennium Campaign and the progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria at the UN headquarters on Tuesday.

Gbeneol was accompanied by Rep. Adeyinka Ajayi, Member House Committee on MDGs.
Child Mortality Rates Up In Africa Despite UN Push

NAIROBI, Kenya — Ten African countries have halved their poverty rates over the last two decades, but child mortality rates have increased in six sub-Saharan nations, a report on the U.N.‘s Millennium Development Goals released Tuesday found.

The countries that halved their poverty rates since 1990 include relatively populous countries such as Ethiopia and Egypt and post-conflict countries such as Angola, the report said.

UNITED NATIONS, October 22, 2009 (Xinhua) — Smashing a Guinness World Record, more than 173 million people around the world joined forces with the United Nations to call on global leaders to stamp out poverty and take action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by their deadline of 2015, UN officials said here Wednesday.

Over 3,000 events were held in more than 120 countries in the fourth year of the “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!” campaign over the weekend. Nearly 60 million more people took part in the festivities this year compared to 2008.

October 21, 2009 – (AP) — UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. Millennium Campaign said Wednesday that more than 173 million people in 121 countries attended about 3,000 events over the weekend to demand action to help bring an end to extreme poverty.

Goals set by 189 world leaders at the U.N. Millennium Summit in September 2000, include cutting extreme poverty by half, ensuring universal primary education, and halting and reversing the HIV/AIDS pandemic, all by 2015.

NEW YORK, October 16, 2009 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday led the students at the UN International School in Manhattan, central New York City, to stand up against poverty as part of the global campaign to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The secretary-general told the students that by taking stand and by acting, “we could end poverty in our lifetimes. And he urged them to lead the way, to learn about the Millennium Development Goals and talk about them with families, friends and teachers.”
