UN Millennium Campaign Global Director, Ms Corinne Woods was in Washington DC to present the first annual Andrew E. Rice Award to a non-governmental organization who has done significant work in advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The award, sponsored by the United Nations Association (UNA) of the National Capital Area (NCA), was presented by Woods to Samuel A. Worthington, President and CEO of InterAction, the largest alliance of US-based international government organizations. Worthington accepted the award on behalf of the 190 InterAction member organizations operating in every developing country, working to overcome poverty and improve the quality of life for its citizens. Assistant Secretary of State, Dr. Esther Brimmer, spoke as the keynote on the importance of the Millennium Development Goals.

The event and award honored Andy Rice who profoundly shaped the international community of students, volunteers, professionals and supporters of the United Nations. In addition to being a former President of the UNA-NCA, Mr. Rice was a member of the research group whose work led to the creation of the United States Peace Corps and also served as the Chief Operating Officer at the Society for International Development. He was an outspoken supporter of the United Nations and of expanding programs designed to educate communities on cooperative solutions for global problems.
