From May 5-7, civil society organizations from across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America will meet in Madrid to analyze progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and ask European Union (EU) member states to work on a common position to bring to the UN Summit on the MDGs at the United Nations in September. Falu Njie, Deputy Director of Policy for the UN Millennium Campaign, will participate in the Conference.

As one of the key civil society events organized under the Spanish EU Presidency, this meeting aims to spark discussion on the progress made by EU member states on the MDGs.

At the event, organizations will exchange ideas and proposals and seek to reach a consensus on the actions that EU countries must take to promote human development and achieve the MDGs by 2015.

Key objectives for this meeting are:

  • To review progress on and the status of the MDGs, with special attention to MDG 8 as the Goal which EU member states have committed to achieve, and to emphasize policy coherence an important tool for promoting sustainable human development.

  • To assess the contribution of the policies of the EU and its individual member states to worldwide poverty eradication and sustainable human development in a constructive dialogue with European decision-makers.

  • To reach a consensus on the actions that must be taken to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs.
