With this strong message, the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) is participating in the European Development Days (EDD) in Strasbourg from November 15-17.

“The European Development Days take place when action is essential to limit the effects of the economic crisis on investment and growth in developing countries, and to secure commitments from donor countries to honour their promises on aid,” said Marina Ponti, Deputy Director, Europe of the United Nations Millennium Campaign.

For the world’s 1.4 billion people living on less than $1.25 per day, having less purchasing power is literally a question of survival – the difference between whether their children get a meal each day or not, and whether it will be possible for them to attend school. “The amount of money that has been mobilized to face the global financial crisis has shown us that the real issue we face in combating poverty is not the availability of resources, but of political will,” said Ponti.

Participants from EU Member States –including officials from governments and local authorities – gathering at the European Development Days will be invited to use their power, influence and voices to mobilize the political will needed to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of eight concrete goals aimed at eradicating global poverty and improving health and education by 2015 that 189 world leaders pledged to achieve.

In order to collect messages against poverty and for the achievement of the MDGs from visitors, policy experts, international aid workers and the media, the UNMC is installing a European Commission co-branded “European Voices against Poverty” recording booth. This awareness-raising tool debuted at the 2006 UN World Summit and since then has travelled to major global events to record “Voices against Poverty” and build public support for the MDGs.

This year’s edition of the EDD will focus particularly on the critical role of local authorities in the fight against poverty and their contribution to the achievement of the MDGs. Accordingly, mayors and other local authority representatives present at the event will discuss with the delegates ways to better coordinate their strategies and actions and engage more decisively in the efforts to fulfil the MDGs.

See the photos of the event

Watch the videos online

Read the Press Release from the event and learn about the Millennium Campaign’s position: France Europe Global Partnership English Sat, 15 Nov 2008 17:17:25 +0000 WebEurope 419 at http://endpoverty2015.org GCAP FRANCE DEMANDS A MORE INCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL SYSTEM http://endpoverty2015.org/en/france/news/gcap-france-demands-more-inclusive-international-financial-system/16/nov/08
(Strasbourg, November 15h) During the European Development Days in Strasbourg, the French Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) - an alliance comprising a growing number of civil society organizations which mobilize to fight extreme poverty - organized an event in the center of town to draw attention to the current economic crisis afflicting poor countries. The symbolic action took place on November 15, while the G-20 economic summit was taking place in Washington, D.C.

The event, which attracted a lot of attention from the media and public at large, centered around golden parachutes, representing the G-20 countries. During this symbolic action, the members of the G-20, comprising the G-8 plus the biggest emerging economies, drank champagne while "stepping over" the 170 countries left aside during their meeting, including some of the poorest countries in the world.

Poor countries have been waiting for reform of the global economic and financial system for decades. They are the primary victims of the current crisis, yet they are left on the sidelines during important decisions.

See the photos of the event

France Europe Global Partnership French Sat, 15 Nov 2008 07:39:00 +0000 WebEurope 422 at http://endpoverty2015.org UN MILLENNIUM CAMPAIGN SHARES EXPERIENCES AT THE FRENCH PARLIAMENT ON THE COMMUNICATION OF MDGs http://endpoverty2015.org/en/europe/news/un-millennium-campaign-shares-experiences-french-parliament-communication-mdgs/15/oct/08
Paris, 14 October 2008 – Marina Ponti, the UN Millennium Campaign’s Director for Europe, participated this morning in the official launch of the French Campaign on the MDGs. The event, hosted by the Parliament at the French National Assembly, gathered representatives of public administration, civil society and the public at large.

Marina Ponti was invited to discuss the UN Millennium Campaign and to share insights on how to better communicate and inform public opinion on the MDGs. During her presentation, Mrs. Ponti highlighted elements which are at the heart of a successful campaign, including the role of actors active in the MDGs debate, as well as the role of non-traditional actors who can have a tremendous impact on public opinion.

The main discussion revolved around the issues areas of trade and agriculture; in this context, the Deputy Director of the Millennium Campaign invited the French government, as well as the governments of other European countries, to move forward with unilateral discussions as the revival of a Doha Round is no longer foreseeable. Mrs. Ponti acknowledged that rich countries can continue striving for the protection of their own small farmers and that of the environment, but this should not be done to the detriment of farmers in poor countries. The existing high trade barriers and agricultural subsidies hinder full market access for poor countries and make it difficult for poor farmers to compete even in their own markets.

The event at the French Parliament also offered an opportunity to announce the forthcoming opening of a national UN Millennium Campaign in France.
http://endpoverty2015.org/en/europe/news/un-millennium-campaign-shares-experiences-french-parliament-communication-mdgs/15/oct/08#comments France Europe Global Partnership English Global partnership MDGs Tue, 14 Oct 2008 14:17:00 +0000 WebEurope 392 at http://endpoverty2015.org
