We want to make sure there is a stronger focus on gender and the empowerment of women all over the world because the world will not reach the Millennium Development Goals without putting a strong focus on women,” says Ulla Tørnæs, the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation.

The basic premise is that increased investment in women provides support to economic growth and poverty reduction.

A global MDG3 Champion Torch is at the heart of the campaign. At least 100 Torches will travel the world, requesting Torch Bearers representing governments, the private sector, civil society, international organisations and the media to make an additional commitment to “Do Something Extra” in support of implementing MDG3.

This week, Minister Tørnæs met with UN Sectretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York to discuss the campaign. She also presented UNDP Administrator Kermal Dervis with a MDG3 Champion Torch”

The Torch can be requested and passed on. At the UN High Level Meeting on the MDGs in September in New York, all commitments will be presented to the UN Secretary General who will be invited to accept the last Torch. The Torch Bearers can use the Torch to create increased awareness and support for gender equality.

Ms. Ulla Tørnæs hopes that the Danish initiative will inspire governments all over the world to take the lead on a certain Millennium Development Goal.
http://endpoverty2015.org/en/gender-equity/news/danish-government-launches-mdg3-global-call-action/18/apr/08#comments Gender Equity Europe English Advocacy gender equality Fri, 18 Apr 2008 19:19:29 +0000 admin 332 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/217 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/217#comments End Hunger Universal Education Gender Equity Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:09:07 +0000 admin 217 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/215 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/215#comments End Hunger Universal Education Gender Equity Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:03:30 +0000 admin 215 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/214 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/214#comments End Hunger Universal Education Gender Equity Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:01:29 +0000 admin 214 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/211 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/211#comments End Hunger Universal Education Gender Equity Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:51:39 +0000 admin 211 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/210 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/210#comments End Hunger Universal Education Gender Equity Child Health Maternal Health Combat HIV/AIDS Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:47:44 +0000 admin 210 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/209 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/209#comments End Hunger Advocacy Millennium Development Goals poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:46:04 +0000 admin 209 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/206 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/206#comments End Hunger Advocacy poverty Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:32:30 +0000 admin 206 at http://endpoverty2015.org New Year's responses http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/202 http://endpoverty2015.org/en/node/202#comments End Hunger Advocacy new years Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:11:26 +0000 admin 202 at http://endpoverty2015.org 43 Million People break Guinness World Record for Stand Up & Speak Out http://endpoverty2015.org/en/africanews/43-million-people-break-guinness-world-record-stand-speak-out/18/oct/07
Over 43.7 million people, in 127 countries have broken the Guinness World Record – set last year at 23.5 million – for the largest number of people to “STAND UP AGAINST POVERTY” in 24 hours.
