Britain’s leading think tank on international development, the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is launching new case studies of outstanding progress in development from seven countries in Africa and Asia.


In South Africa, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Library, in collaboration with Itsoseng Youth Forum, organized a "Stand Up, Take Action, Make Noise for the Millennium Development Goals" campaign at Itsoseng Combined High School and Madiba Utlwa Primary school in Hebron in the North West Province, near Pretoria.

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Lagos, in collaboration with numerous organizations, held a rally and street walk in Lagos to “Stand Up” and make noise against poverty.

At least 200 people -- including staff members of UN agencies in Lagos, members of civil society organizations and the media -- participated with Vuvuzelas and whistles. They were accompanied by a mobile brass musical band as they walked, danced and sang from the UNIC office in Lagos to the Ikoyi/Obalende Local Government Council Secretariat.

Citizens made noise at Stand Up and Take Action events across the African continent this weekend, in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).


Mr. Charles Abugre is the new Deputy Director of the United Nations (UN) Millennium Campaign in Africa with regional office in Kenya. A Ghanaian, Abugre was in Lagos recently during his on-going tour of Africa and did a survey highlighting his plan for the organization.


Nairobi, January 11, 2010: Youth from eleven African countries will be joining their colleagues from Japan aboard the 68th Voyage of the Peace Boat scheduled to arrive in Africa on January 19, at the Kenyan harbour of Mombasa.

The Peace Boat, a Japan-based international non-governmental initiative, carries out annual cruises that sail from Yokohama through ports around the world promoting human rights, sustainable development and respect for the environment.
