THE MDGS THROUGH SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS

8 ways to change the world
8 ways to change While it is national governments that bear primary responsibility for the implementation of the Millennium Goals, actors at all levels must work together towards their achievement. Local authorities are of course key: there are amazing possibilities for change in the millions of decisions taken every day by local politicians and policymakers. Indeed local authorities all around the world are already engaged in the global efforts to achieve the Millennium Goals by 2015.

AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT DIALOGUE

Campaigning for the MDGs: Making Votes and Voices Count in Elections
climate change National and sub-national elections provide important opportunities to establish, reaffirm or redirect development priorities. This short guidebook describes how and why the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can be important to this process—towards the larger end of achieving human development and a better, more equitable world. The book is primary intended for civil society representatives interested in MDG advocacy during elections, although it has also been designed as a resource for political parties and candidates. It walks readers through basic strategies and tools to campaign for the goals, and lay the groundwork for political commitments to specific development achievements. But first, two basic questions must be answered: What are the MDGs? And why exactly do they matter during elections? Click here to download the PDF-Brochure
PiGA DEBE FOR WOMEN’S RiGHTS
climate change This document presents a review of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with particular attention being paid to gender equality, women’s empowerment and commitment to improving maternal health in 17 African countries namely: Burkina Faso, Congo DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The study shows that the MDGs will not be attained unless and until issues of women’s empowerment, rights and development are addressed. The achievement of MDGs is strongly grounded in addressing the needs of women. Societies in which women’s equality is paramount, are more likely to attain the MDGs by 2015. Addressing inequalities based on gender greatly reduces poverty and increase levels of wellbeing for everyone. Click here to download the PDF-Brochure
MDGs and Climate change
climate change Climate change and global poverty have attracted considerable attention in recent years as key global justice challenges of our times. Both are serious challenges to the future health and prosperity of our planet. They must be combated simultaneously; we cannot take care of one without addressing the other. Climate change presents significant threats to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) especially those related to eliminating poverty and hunger and promoting environmental sustainability. An increasing body of evidence points to the disproportionate negative impact that climate change will have on the poorest countries that, ironically, have contributed least tothe problem. Reaching Our Development Goals: Why Does Aid Effectiveness Matter?
humanrights This booklet aims to stimulate dialogue around the aid reform effort embodied by the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness. It reminds us why this agreement is important, outlines the objectives that have been set, and points to what still needs to be accomplished. This effort is driving many actors in developing countries—56 of whom participated in the 2008 Survey on Monitoring the Paris Declaration—, aid agencies, and civil society groups to reflect and act together within the widest consultative process ever convened on development assistance. This booklet reflects that process, bringing together a range of voices on aid and its quality. Click here to download the PDF-Brochure
RAISING THE BAR ON DEVELOPMENT REPORTING
mdg muslim “When a critical mass of people are in one place, if you don’t empower them they will empower themselves through revolution, If we want to avoid chaos we have to empower the poor people,” Anna Tibaijuka, head of UN-HABITAT during State of the World’s Cities 2006/07 report. Human rights and the MDGs
humanrights The MDGs and human rights have common objectives: to preserve and protect human dignity. While there are many different con- tributors to poverty, injustice and discrimination are omnipresent and always constitute a de- nial of human rights. It is for this reason that there are extensive direct linkages between human rights provisions and the MDGs. For each Goal there are often corresponding hu- man rights obligations, standards or norms. Click here to download the PDF-Brochure
The Compilation of MDG Case Studies: Reflecting Progress and Challenges in Asia
mdg study As a result of our collaboration with various partners throughout the Asia region, we compiled a selection of MDG case studies from a number of public hearings and/or poverty tribunals, which were organised to review the achievement and shortfalls of the MDGs. The compilation of MDG case studies and policy recommendations simply demonstrates standpoints of civil society and relevant stakeholders, including some UN agencies, in the development process.Click here to download the PDF-Brochure
