This is a document of UN Millennium Campaign Asia.
Throughout the Asia region, countries have made some significant progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, issues of growing inequality, social exclusion and discrimination, particularly of the marginalised and disadvantaged population, remain and continue to hamper economic and social development.
While acknowledging the various overall accomplishments, the report goes beyond the aggregated data and highlights critical issues of the lowest castes, ethnic and religious minorities and women.
From the civil society perspective, the report highlights key policy areas, common obstacles as well as MDG progress among countries in the South and Southeast Asia regions.
The report is divided into four sections: 1) regional development context; 2) assessment of current government policy and poverty reduction strategy; 3) overall mid-term review of MDG trends and progress; and 4) proposed strategies to accelerate achievement of the MDGs.
