Barcelona, 4th of October 2008.- The Spanish Millennium Campaign today participated in the Catalan Cooperation Party organized by the Catalan Government and the Catalan Cooperation Agency. This event brings together all the development cooperation actors and institutions in Catalonia, including NGOs, local governments, trade unions, universities and immigrant associations, to show citizens what is being done in Catalonia on the fight against poverty and the achievement of the MDGs and to raise awareness about these issues.

In the run-up to the event, the Spanish Millennium Campaign facilitated the joint work and participation of the actors linked to the UN working in Catalonia, which are the Catalan committee of UNICEF, ACNUR, UNESCO, and the Spanish United Nations Association. All of the UN-related entities organized a joint activity focusing on the MDGs as human rights on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights next December. Participants were invited to have their picture taken holding one of the MDG icons as a way to advocate for their fulfillment.

In addition, the brand-new Spanish Millennium Campaign’s Voices Against Poverty Box was installed in a central space in the Park where the event took place, allowing citizens to leave messages against poverty and for the MDGs.

The Spanish Millennium Campaign greeted the Vice-President of the Catalan Government, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Director General for Cooperation, and the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona at the Voices Against Poverty Box and invited them to leave messages. Numerous other citizens joined them in asking national governments to fulfill their promises and redouble their efforts to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
