Despite the impressive progress made by Asia-Pacific nations over the past decade in economic growth, 1.5 billion people in the region still live on less than two U.S. dollars a day, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Thursday.
The statement was made as ADB representatives are highlighting the continuing prevalence of poverty in the region during discussions over the replenishment of the Asian Development Fund, an endowment used to provide grants and low-interest loans to some of Asia and the Pacific’s poorest nations.

The ‘Citizens’ Report on the MDGs’ was released today at the UNDP Hall, New Delhi among representatives of civil society and the UN. Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj & Youth Affairs and Salil Shetty (Global Director of the UN Millennium Campaign – New York) spoke about the importance of the report.

A 350 kilometre demonstration march, which began on 2 October (Gandhi’s Birthday) in Gwalior, India, is travelling to New Delhi over twenty days. Up to 20,000 people, including village leaders and activists, are marching in an attempt to secure land rights from the government. This is the first installment in a series of videos following the march.
